How to Change Air Filter in Your Toyota

They say that you should change your car’s air filter every 30,000 miles. Some even say that you should change it every 24,000! That is a lot of money that you are going to have to pay out to the mechanics every time you need that changed. The good news is that if you own a Toyota, then it is easy to do yourself. In fact, if you choose to change your Toyota’s air filter yourself, you can change it more often. This is good if you live around things like road construction that goes on a lot. No matter what kind of Toyota you have, whether it’s a Yaris or a Highlander, you can bet that you will be able to change the air filter yourself!

Getting Started

Whenever you are about to start changing your air filter, it’s a good idea to turn off your car, and let it cold down if you have been driving it. To do this, park your car and pop your hood. This will allow the car to cool down a lot faster. Now, after you do that, you need to locate your air filter housing, and remove the cap. Depending on the type of Toyota you have, the housing could be located in different spots. Check your owner’s manual if you find yourself having problems. After locating the housing, you are going to notice that the top of it is held in place with a metal clamp. This can be easily removed if you pry it off with a flat head screwdriver. If yours is held on by a screw, you, of course, want to unscrew it before trying to pry it off.

After getting it open, it will be time to remove the old air filter and discard it. This is something that you can do without having to do any kind of special discarding rules. After you take out the old filter, you may notice things like dirt and debris caught up in the filter housing. It is a good idea to clean this kind of stuff out. Of course, you cannot allow any kind of debris to enter into your throttle, nor can you allow it to get into your carburetor. After all, that is why the filter is there in the first place. After cleaning it, you will be able to install the new air filter into the filter housing in the same spot you took the old one out of. At this point, you are going to simply want to go back in reverse of what you did. You are going to want to close back up the housing, put the clamp back on, and put the screw back in it if there was one holding it in place.

After that, you are done. It’s a good idea to start up your car and make sure that everything sounds normal. Make sure that you return all screws to the right location and so on. The overall problem that a lot of people have doing this is that they allow dirt to get into the engine. This can cause very bad damage to your whole car. In fact, this can ruin your car. Thus, above all else, you have to make sure that you do not allow anything to get into your engine. Clean the area behind the filter good. As soon as the car is turned on, it is going to start sucking in air from that area. That means that if there is anything in the way, it is going to get sucked in there. That is why the air filter is a very vital part to your car. Overall, this is a very easy thing to do, and most people can do this even if they are not good at working on cars. Just make sure that if you are the one changing the filter, you are changing it every 30,000 miles or so.

Kia Rio and Kia Spectra – With an MSRP listed at $11, 110 the Kia Rio is the lowest priced four door car sold in the U.S. Recent upgrades for the model include several safety features: six airbags, impact-absorbing steering column, front and rear crumple zones and side-impact door beams. Select the Spectra for a car that is better appointed and larger than the Rio.

Saturn ION – Base models of the little car from Tennessee currently are retailing around $13,500, but that price may drop later in the year as GM seeks to move several slow selling cars including the ION

Toyota Corolla – Always competitive, the Corolla is priced at $14,105 and is considered by industry leaders to have the highest quality amongst all small cars on the market. A lower cost model, the Echo, has been discontinued but a new model, the Yaris, will appear later this year and retail for about $12,000.

Scion xA and Scion xB – Two of the three models sold by Toyota’s Generation “Y” division, Scion, are priced under $15,000. The xA starts around $13,500 and the xB sells for about $1000 more than that.

So, are the days of finding transportation under $15,000 soon to be behind us? On the contrary, with the 2007 importation of cars from China the under $10,000 category will soon have new life as cars from Chery and Geely hit U.S. showrooms pushing new prices down to as low as $6600! As a result, Ford, Dodge, and others are looking at ways to build and import cars overseas or in Mexico that will sell for much than current base models.

Small Cars Making a Big Splash in North America

It’s been a while since the sub-compact car market has garnered such attention in

North America. Our friends in Europe have always known the virtues of small cars.

But here in North America, SUV’s have dominated parking lots at the local Pier 1 for

more than a decade. However as current gas prices inch forward and with future

prices looking uncertain (and by uncertain I mean they’re certainly going to be

higher than today) more people are buying small, fuel-efficient cars. We’ve seen a

lot of activity in the segment recently. Toyota has introduced the Yaris, Hyundai has

significantly revised the Accent, Kia has updated the Rio, Honda has just introduced

the Fit, and Nissan will introduce the Versa in May of this year. And let’s not forget

Scion with the xA and xB.

Having a car in the sub-compact market makes sense for a variety of reasons. First,

it introduces new, young buyers to the brand. If their experience is good they’ll stick

with the brand as they grow up and move to a larger vehicle. Toyota, Honda,

Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Volkswagen, Mazda and others all got their start in the sub-

compact car market. Secondly, it provides a safety net during economic downturns.

If gas prices rise unexpectedly, the knee-jerk reaction is to get a small, more fuel-

efficient vehicle. And these cars are fuel-efficient. The new Honda Fit for example,

gets an estimated 33 miles per gallon in the city, 38 mpg on the highway.

But these are no one-show ponies. Beyond fuel efficiency they offer respectable

performance. The Toyota Yaris has 106 horsepower which may not sound like

much, but tipping the scales at only 2315 lbs, it has a power-to-weight ratio close

to that of the 220 horsepower Hummer H3. And these cars can carry just about

anything. With the rear seats up, the Honda Fit can swallow 21.3 cubic feet of gear.

A Ford Crown Victoria by comparison can hold 20.6 cubic feet worth of cargo in the

trunk.

The domestics haven’t invested much in this class recently, if ever. The Chevrolet

Aveo is essentially a re-badged Daewoo and doesn’t offer the level of refinement as

the others. The Ford Focus is larger and more expensive, as is the new for ‘06

Dodge Caliber. But with the uncertainty of gas prices and growing competition in

the segment, GM, Ford, and DaimlerChrysler would be wise to offer competitive

offering in this segment and introduce first time buyers to their respective brands.

For most manufacturers, having competitive sub-compact cars has grown the

business and created brand loyalty, something the folks in Detroit have been trying

to do for a while now.

Body Kits – Installing Them Right Scores Major Style Points

An auto body kit is one of the most exciting upgrades you can do to your vehicle. A good aero kit or body kit can really transform the appearance of the vehicle, and the installer will determine if this is a good or bad transformation.

I would personally suggest you find a reputable shop experienced in your type of body kit work. They should know how to work with the material you selected, and how to color match, prep and paint the kit. They should also know how to, if necessary, make adjustments to ensure a proper fitting. Your finished product will be as good as the effort put into it.

Having said that, it is never a bad idea to learn something new. Before you begin, make sure you designate enough time to the project to install your body kit right the first time. This type of body work requires a lot of patience if you are inexperienced at it. Here are some instructions to help you get started on the project.

The first thing to do is to prep the body kit for painting. It will be much easier to work on before it is installed. If you do not intend to paint the whole vehicle, it may be wise to color match and paint the body kit prior to installation.

Start by removing the pieces that will be replaced. This may include the front and rear bumper covers. You can find the bolts for the front cover in the fender wells and underneath the cover near the frame. Remove these bolts and loosen the cover. Depending on the application, be sure to remove any of the lighting that is attached to it, such as the headlights, side markers, fog lights, etc. Now check to make sure that there isn’t anything else holding it in place, such as a grille or license plate holder. Carefully remove the front bumper cover and set to the side. Keep the hardware handy, as you will need it later. Remove the rear bumper in the same manner, as well as the trim panel located just above the bumper (if applicable). Most cars won’t have side skirts at this point, but if it does, remove them by removing the bolts that hold it to the vehicle. They are located on the back of the side skirts.

Take your replacement cover and carefully align it to the car and check the fitting. Some of the kits will have 3M adhesive to help hold the kit in place during this process. You may find that the foam inserts are an obstruction to the new body kit. You can either remove them or trim them to size, depending on the application. I have found that if possible, it is better to trim them to fit because they will help sturdy the body kit so it doesn’t appear as flimsy. If you have done your research and purchased a good kit, then you should line up almost perfect. Make some markings as to where you will drill your holes. You can also use the old bumper cover to line up the holes but it may not be as accurate as the fitting approach.

If you find yourself in a situation where the kit doesn’t line up exactly, there are some things you can do to correct the problem. First, locate the problem areas. They will be most noticeable on the sides where it matches up to the fenders or in the very front where it matches up to the hood. If you notice one side has a bigger seam in these areas than the other side, try moving the cover to the larger seam side in very small increments until there is no longer a difference. The seam should be the same width as other seams on the car, most notably the same size as the seam from the fender to the door, or the fender to the closed hood. Using these same widths for the seams will create a “seamless” look for the finished product.

If your problem area is in the front, you will have to adjust the body kit in small increments until it lines up. If you have too larges of a seam, try gently pulling the kit from the two sides to tighten up the front. it should have a little bit of play in it since it is not bolted down. If the seam is to small, try pushing the sides in towards the front of the vehicle to free up any space. Once the front is adjusted, look to see if the sides are aligned property. If you are happy with the fitment, place the bolts in the holes and tighten them down. Start in the middle, and work your way out to the sides making sure that your seams line up properly. If your kit comes with 3M adhesive on the back side, adhere the kit to the car once the proper alignment is made. This will help hold the kit in place and allow the seams to be smaller in width.

In some unfair and unfortunate circumstances, you may find your kits not lining up after all these adjustments. These kits will require some body work or fiberglass work to be done for proper fitting, such as trimming or sanding up the side edges and refinishing them, or repositioning the bolts. Hopefully you won’t encounter any of these types of problems, because they tend to have to be solved on a case by case basis. With your front piece of the body kit installed, you can concentrate on the side skits and rear bumper cover. The side skirts should be fairly simple, and will require drilling pilot holes in the bottom of the car. To ensure proper alignment here, attach the side skirt to the vehicle using the 3M adhesive (if provided). It should line up exactly with a small seam in the front and rear next to the fenders. If the seam is larger on one side, split the difference and drill the pilot holes for the bolts and secure it in place.

Now move to the rear bumper cover. Follow the same procedures as above until you get a goof fitting. Again, you may need to remove or trim the rear bumper foam inserts, depending on the shape of the body kit. Secure it in place and enjoy the finished product.
